A wealth of information is available in maps and reports through the various criteria contained in
the Control Panel selections described below. These criteria can be mixed & matched in ways to meet the needs of
the user.
Traffic Stations: An explanation of the Control Panel terminology and an example search is shown below the following images:
 |
- Video Cam Icon: Click this Icon next to Traffic Stations heading to view a short video describing
available features in the Traffic Station queries.
- Output LRM: Select the desired LRM to display from the picklist:
- Selected Route: All state routes and major county routes (functionally classed minor collector and above) are listed in the drop down box, and any single route may be selected for the map/report. If a particular route is selected, a box will appear for the input of the beginning (BMP) and ending milepoints (EMP) for the map/report.
- Spatial Filter: This filter defines a particular area for building the map/report. Current
View will make the map/report using whichever map may be currently visible at the right of the Control Panel;
additional filters include maps of Island, Census Tracts, political House & Senate districts (state),
and a Custom filter, enabling the drawing of a circle or polygon around a desired area for the map/report.
Selection of the Spatial Filter option will produce an Area drop-down box which contains available Island
names, district numbers, etc. depending upon the filter that was selected.
Using the Custom Filter: to map features within a selected circular or polygon area in the map, select
"Custom Filter", click the radio button for Circle or Polygon, and then click the "Draw Filter" button.
A dialog box instructs to draw a circle\polygon and then make a map. Click "ok" and the cursor will appear
as a "+".
-To draw a circle, click once on the map where the center of the circle will be and release the mouse
button; then move the mouse to move the cursor away from that point to the desired radius of the circle
and click again; the cursor will then be free to select Make Map, etc.
-To draw a polygon, click once on the map, release the mouse button, and move the mouse to draw the
first leg of the polygon; click once, then draw the next leg; repeat drawing as many legs as desired, then
double click to finish the polygon and free the cursor to select Make Map, etc.
- Traffic Sta.(s) by Name: Locate a Traffic Station(s) by selecting the name from a pick list.
- Traffic Sta.(s) by Criteria: Locate Traffic Stations by selecting from a list of criteria.
- Reference Year: Select the year on which to query the data.
- Make Map: After the preceding criteria have been selected (or using the default selections) a
color-coded map of the features will be produced when the Make Map button is selected. Note that if the
results are to be saved as a DGN, Shape or KML file, the check box at the bottom of the Control labeled
"Save Results As" must be checked before making a map.
The following Map was created by zooming in on an area of Molokai and, leaving
all criteria as default, clicking on Make Map. Once the map is presented, information may be viewed in
the tool tips when the mouse is moved over the Traffic Station symbol on the map as the following map shows.
The Legend of Traffic Station symbology on the Map can be closed by clicking the blue "Click to Hide"
item at the bottom of the Legend.
By clicking on a Traffic Station symbol on the Map a link to other information appears, as shown below
left. Clicking a link within this link provides additional information such as that shown on the right.
- Make Map & Build Report: A comprehensive report of available data for the selected features
can be created with the map by selecting this function.
By clicking on the link "Report>>" above the Map area as shown in view below at the left, the Report -
along with a small view of the map - becomes visible; clicking the "<<Map" link above the report
returns the map. By clicking on an active button (i.e., not muted) at the left of the report, the same
information can be retrieved as described above after clicking a Traffic Station Symbol on a map.
- Comparative Year: The Reference Year data may be compared to the data of other years by highlighting one or more years in the list and clicking on Do Comparison. Use the “Ctrl” key and the left mouse button to select multiple years.
- Backdrop: Before making a map, selecting Raster will display a low-resolution satellite image under the resulting map. Selecting Vector returns the map to the normal view.
- Save Results As: Before making a map, checking this box will provide a zipped file for download that contains
Shape (shp) files, Design (DGN) files or Google Earth (KML) files.
Traffic Station Search Example - search by Name
Station searches can be made by selection of a route number and the desired beginning and end
milepoints, or by the Spatial Filters which enable searches by selected areas. However, this example
shows how to locate information on a Traffic Station whose Name is known:
- Select "Fit All" from the Navigation Bar to display a map of all Islands (If the Traffic Station
location is known, a map of the area containing it may be displayed; however, if the Station being
sought is not within the current map view an error message will be shown.)
- Select Queries/Traffic Stations
- Leave defaults as they are, and Click the "Traffic Sta.(s) by Name" button
- Open a dropdown box and select the name of the Traffic Station being sought; in this example we use
the first one in the list for simplicity. Then click the "Return To Traffic Stations" button to return to the
main Control Panel - note that the box next to the "Traffic Sta.(s) by Name" label is now checked to
remind you that at least one has been selected for a search.
- Leave the default "Reference Year" as is, and select "Comparative Year" 2000.
- Leave the Spatial Filter default as Current View
- Select Make Map (waving palm trees are visible while the new map and report are being generated):
the Map reappears as shown below right.
As noted above, if the selected station falls outside the area shown by the map, the message shown
below on the left will appear. A successfully located station will appear as shown below on
the right - Note that the Comparative Year information appears in the tooltip when the cursor is moved
over the station, and additional reports as described above can be retrieved by clicking the Station Symbol.
End of Traffic Station Search Example - search by Name
The button "Traffic Sta.(s) by Criteria" enables the location of a group of Traffic Stations that meet the same
criteria. When selected, the following popup Control Panel appears for the selection of search criteria. The
default is “DC” which means all traffic stations with this characteristic will appear on the map.
Select Y (yes) to display all traffic stations with this characteristic or N (no) to not
display them.
Outputting Reports
Reports can be copied and saved into any Microsoft-compatible desktop office product. This example
uses a Microsoft Excel worksheet. All of the standard manipulations may be performed on the report
(sorting, totals, saved, printed, etc.). The following views show the Report with cells highlighted
for copy (right-click and copy), and the Excel data sheet into which the cells have been pasted (
right-click & paste).
